Il tient son nom de la couleur du sable cristallin tapissant son fond. Situé à 1055 mètres d’altitude ce lac du massif des Vosges occupant un cirque glaciaire naturel attire en hiver de nombreux amateurs de photo. Un rocher en forme de forteresse appelé « château Hans » domine cet espace grandiose. Une légende raconte qu’un cruel seigneur vivait dans ce château qui surplombait jadis le rocher et terrorisait la population.
